UC STAR Course — Maths 199, comm. Feb 2018

Do you excel in Mathematics?

Is your ability in mathematics such that you would like an enrichment course while concurrently doing your Year 13 work?

Have you been involved in accelerated courses at school and/or passed Level 3 Calculus credits in Year 12?

If you have answered yes, then MATH199 is for you!

UC is offering MATH199 FREE to secondary school students in the Chch region who excel in mathematics.  MATH199 is a two semester, 30 point programme, aligned with MATH102 in Semester 1 and MATH103 in Semester 2.  Although the primary source of the content is online, MATH199 students are required to attend classes from 4.15pmto 6.30pm every Thursday during UC term times. There will also be extra help classes before tests.

If you would like to be challenged next year to complete a university level Maths paper and get the first 30 credits towards your degree before you leave school, see Ms McLaughlin to get a brochure and enrol.

Defence Careers Experience (DCE)

We’re pleased to let you know that we will be running a Defence Careers Experience in the second half in 2016. This is a five day residential experience held at Burnham Military Camp for Secondary School Students that are interested in a career in the Navy, Army or Air Force. This will be held from 25 – 29  September. We’re looking for smart, active and team minded students who are interested in joining the NZDF once they leave school. This is ideally suited for Y12 students, but we’ll also consider Y11 or Y13 students.

We’re pleased to let you know that we will be running a Defence Careers Experience in the second half in 2016. This is a five day residential experience held at  for Secondary School Students that are interested in a career in the Navy, Army or Air Force. This will be held from 26 – 30 September. We’re looking for smart, active and team minded students who are interested in joining the NZDF once they leave school. This is ideally suited for Y12 students, but we’ll also consider Y11 or Y13 students. The DCE will focus largely on soldier, sailor, airmen and airwomen roles. They include electronic, mechanical, technical and other hands on roles in the NZDF! A more detailed explanation of the new online application process will be released closer to the application opening date. Connexis Electricity Supply Taster Course – Chch

A reminder that a few positions are still left on the Connexis Electricity Supply Taster Course in Christchurch 18-22 July 2016

Connexis’ is offering a unique and FREE opportunity for students who are interested in the Electricity Supply industry, or would simply like to learn exactly what career pathways the Electricity Supply industry has on offer.

We will be accepting applications for the Christchurch Taster Course, being held  the week of 18th – 22nd July at ARA Institute of Canterbury, Woolston Campus, Sullivan Ave, Student Services Building, Christchurch.

Taster Courses are a fantastic way to introduce students to the Electricity Supply industry, providing them with a number of work relevant areas and activities including:

·         How the NZ electricity supply industry operates;

·         Practical hands on activities;

·         Health and safety;

·         Working at heights or abseiling or rock climbing;

·         A range of site visits to electricity supply companies

To apply for a place on the Christchurch Taster Course, students need to:

·         Be at least 16 years of age at the start of the course;

·         Have completed a minimum of NCEA level 1;

·         Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident;

Infrastructure ITO (trading as Connexis) – Electricity supply course

Infrastructure ITO (trading as Connexis) is now seeking applications from men and women in Christchurch for an upcoming taster course.

With the successful completion of this action-packed course you will gain a greater understanding of the electricity supply industry, the careers available and whether this industry is the one for you.

This course will be held at ARA Institute of Canterbury, Sullivan Avenue Campus, Student Services Building, Christchurch and there are no costs to participants.

Attendees will be introduced to trade and technical areas and activities within the industry:

  • Knowledge of the NZ electricity supply industry
  • Practical activities such as electrical and mechanical workshop projects
  • Health and safety and wearing personal protection equipment
  • Working at heights training
  • A range of site visits to electricity supply companies in and around Christchurch
  • Career pathways into the industry and lots more!

All personal protection equipment including safety boots, overalls, hats and safety glasses will be provided and you get to keep the boots.

Apply now by completing the application form on page 2 if you meet the following criteria:

  • Aged at least 16 years old at the start of the course,
  • Completed a minimum of NCEA Level 1 with good literacy and numeracy skills and an interest in science and technology,
  • New Zealand citizen or permanent resident,
  • Interested in hands-on (trades and technical) careers in the electricity supply industry,
  • Have a strong work ethic (demonstrated either at school or employment).
