DEFENCE CAREERS EXPERIENCE 2015
For many years now, the New Zealand Defence Force has invited selected secondary school students to experience aspects of life in the Defence Force through the Defence Careers Experience (DCE).
This will continue in 2015 with Defence Careers conducting two Defence Careers Experiences. These will be conducted through a three day residential experience with travel days either side. The experience will provide a quality Defence Experience to students who have shown interest and may wish to pursue a career within the New Zealand Defence Force.
The Defence Careers Experience is designed to challenge students through a wide variety of unfamiliar situations and team-building activities. Physical fitness activities will be conducted throughout the three days, with early morning exercises, confidence building, and social interaction with fellow students and Defence Force personnel.
The first DCE of the year will be held from 13 April – 17 April 2015 and will target Officer, Intelligence Officer, System Engineers, Electronic Welfare Operator and Communication Systems Operators. We ask that you carefully consider each student’s suitability for these roles. These students should have a high standard of academic achievement, are motivated and have some leadership and team work experience. The second DCE, held from 28 Sept – 02 October 2015 will target technical and non-technical trades. The break down of the roles we are targeting for each DCE is shown in Enclosure One.
For students who wish to apply for the April 2015 DCE please have them complete the application form at Enclosure Two. Please ensure that the students provide all NCEA subjects and credits along with extra-curricular achievements / interests.
Students must also register on our website www.defencecareers.mil.nz. This is a simple process which starts by clicking the “REGISTER” tab on the home page, then completing only Steps 1 and 2. There is no obligation to join the NZDF by doing this, it is not an application. It will ensure that we have the correct contact details for applicants and it helps us to collect data for future activities. Applicants who are not registered will not be considered for selection.
Both courses will be held at Burnham Military Camp. Travel to the course will be on the Monday of that week. Travel home will be on the Friday of the same week. Christchurch and Canterbury students will be required to provide their own transport to and from Burnham Military Camp. For those students outside of Canterbury transport will be arranged by Defence Careers. Defence Careers will cover all travel, accommodation, and meal costs. All that is asked in return is that participants fully involve themselves in all activities and be physically prepared (carrying no injuries) for the programme. Participants will be challenged, so a high standard of physical fitness is required. Due to security restrictions all applicants must be NZ Citizens. Applicants also need to complete and return the Medical Clearance Form attached at Enclosure Four.
Applications for the DCE in April are to be received by Friday 6th March 2015. Applications received after this date will not be eligible for selection. Applications for the October DCE will be called for in June 2015.
