Lifeguard – applications close 11th August

We have plenty to look forward to in the coming months with the great weather just around the corner. We are busy planning our summer activities within Recreation & Sport as we are due to open our summer pools; Jellie Park, Te Hapua Halswell, Waltham and Lyttelton.  These positions will also include shifts at our other indoor pools/facilities throughout the wider network.

Excellent customer service is one of our top priorities and you’ll share our vision, making sure every customer who enters our facility has a great time with their family and friends and leaves with a smile on their face. You’ll be a natural when it comes to problem-solving and thinking on your feet, and you know how to be a part of great solutions.

To be successful, you will be a capable swimmer and have the ability to stay calm in busy and pressured situations. You’re a responsible individual and have the skills to communicate with a diverse range of customer groups.

Important information regarding the process:

  • As part of the shortlisting process, you’ll be required to complete a swim test to assess your capability in the water. If invited (by email), you must be available to self-book online between 20th and 28th of August.
  • If you are successful through this, you will then be invited and must attend an Assessment Centre day on 17th or 18th September which may take up to 2.5 hours at Te Hapua, Halswell Pool.
  • If successful through the Assessment Centre, and you do not hold a current Pool Lifeguard Skills Award (PLSA), you will be required to undertake two full days of lifeguard training followed by a lifeguard assessment day to gain your formal Pool Lifeguard Qualification. This will be provided to you by the Christchurch City Council on 15th & 16th October.  Following on from this, there is a one-day assessment session which will be held the following week on the 23rd October.
  • To complete this qualification you will be required to complete or hold a current Comprehensive First Aid Certificate covering Unit Standards 6400, 6401, and 6402, this is at your own cost and should be completed before October 15.

Additional recruitment information

Salary: $21.15 – $21.57 per hour
Hours of work: Full-time & Part-time, Fixed Term between 14th November 2020 and 28th March 2021 at Jellie Park, Te Hapua Halswell, Lyttelton & Waltham pool and other indoor facilities throughout the network.  You must be available to work throughout this entire period.

(Please note, that while contracts that will be offered to the successful candidates will be fixed term with no fixed hours, you will be able to pick up work as required, potentially up to 40 hours per week)

All our Summer Lifeguards are required to have the capability to work at any of the Council’s swimming pools, so flexibility is essential. Successful applicants MUST commit to be available to work weekends, evenings and public holidays between 14th November 2020 and 28th March 2021 and be available for induction on the 12th November 2020.


The Christchurch City Council is currently observing a recruitment freeze as a result of the financial impacts of Covid-19 on our organisation.
